Winston and I are back from our trip to India. It was challenging as well as productive. The traffic was terrifying. The roads are crowded with cars, buses, bikes, motorcycles, rickshaws, open 3 wheeled "autos", people, dogs, cows. All are going as fast as possible, winding in and out, all beeping or honking as if to say "get out of my way." I was silently calling the angels to surround us.
It was horrifying to see the extreme poverty. Moms begging, holding babies with empty baby bottles in one hand. Many beggars, both children and adults. People lying along the road sleeping (or dead?). The dirt, sewage, piles of garbage. There is a law not to kill stray dogs or rats. A rabid dog is common. The noise is constant and loud. Our mornings started at 5 AM with a Muslim call to prayer on a loudspeaker. All these things attack all the senses and you become weary very quickly.
I appreciated all your prayers. It is when you're in these kinds of situations that dependence on the prayers of God's people is felt. I couldn't have done the things I did without the courage God gave me to do them. Did several teachings in a women's conference and gave greetings in the meetings. The women are so hungry for teaching and compassion from another woman. I was forewarned that they would line up for a touch and blessing. There was desperation in many of their eyes. I tried to focus on their real need and pray that way. One young girl looked longingly at my Bible and said she has always wished for an English Bible. I was happy to give her mine. I did Sunday School for 3 separate groups of children using Bible story pictures. Such happy, energetic children! I am glad I was able to be useful and hope and pray that my efforts will continue to bring comfort, hope, and change.
Winston is impressed with the need to train young (20-30 years old) people with a calling to minister in villages. These men and women could then go to unreached villages and establish a Christian presence and new churches.
The situation and travel were so difficult, but we felt that our visit was very successful in helping people develop in their ministry.
We are on Cape Cod now and for the next couple of months, renting a sweet little house. We look forward to long walks by the ocean and taking care of our new granddaughter Annika when her Mom returns to work.
